What Is Emergency Blanket Made Of?

The first aid blanket is an important part of any first aid kit, and the benefits it brings to you are more than just keeping you warm. However, in any survival or adventurous situation, keeping warm should be your top priority.

So what is its material made of to achieve the effect of heat preservation?

1. PET aluminized film emergency blanket

    Material: PET mylar film

    Thickness: 12 microns

    Color: gold/silver is the most common, other colors can be selected such as silver/silver, army green/silver

Orange/silver, camouflage/silver, black/silver, etc.

2. PE aluminized film emergency blanket

Main ingredients: PE+Aluminum

      Thickness: 26 microns or 30 microns

      Color: orange/silver is the most common, other colors can be selected such as yellow/silver, green/silver

Either side of the emergency blanket can be kept warm. Because of the high density of the PET film itself, it is not easy to emit temperature to achieve the effect of heat preservation.

The golden color is very conspicuous in nature and will not be confused with the nature (reflected light from the water surface such as lakes), so the golden surface is more likely to be found by search and rescue personnel in the wild in nature. The golden surface of general emergency blankets is widely used for rescuers on ships.

The silver surface is similar to the reflection of a mirror, and it can also reflect light to achieve the effect of heat preservation.

The main features of emergency blanket are as follows:

a) When used in a low temperature environment, it can keep 90% of its own heat from radiating, and the strong reflection is easy for rescuers to find;

b) After an accident, an emergency blanket can be used to cover the body to prevent a sharp drop in body temperature;

c) The first aid blanket can be used as a reflective film to send a signal to rescuers;

d) The first aid blanket can be used as a rain poncho.

e) Small, light, easy to carry and cheap

How Long Does An Emergency Blanket Last?

An unopened mylar emergency blanket should last between 1 to 2 years. The short shelf life is possibly due to moisture, oxidation, and UV exposure, among other factors. Over time, you may notice your blankets deteriorating and fading as a result of the aluminum delaminating from the mylar sheet. We recommend replacing (or at least checking) them once a year. The climate you live in and the way they’re stored could have a lot to do with their shelf life.

A used blanket, on the other hand, can be reused but its longevity really depends on how it was previously used, and how much wear and tear it received. The silver lining may come off after being exposed to water.

In conclusion

Most blankets have two sides to them: one side will be very shiny/ metallic and the other will be dull or of an entirely different color, typically orange, olive green, or camouflage. Sometimes the shiny side is gold, but oftentimes it’s silver. As with all products you’re unfamiliar with, make sure to thoroughly read the instructions that come with your blanket because every manufacturer is different.

There are several types of emergency blankets but essentially they work the same. Their primary goal is to prevent heat-loss by retaining up to 90% of your current body heat. They’re not designed to produce more warmth.
